This Week in Imaging: Next-Generation A4 MFPs from OKI, Canon; Epson Sets Sights on Ink-Cartridge Clones; More
This week, jumping right into 2015, Canon U.S.A. and OKI Data Americas both stepped up their game in the A4 desktop MFP category. Canon added two new Color imageCLASS MFPs that are the first in the imageCLASS family with touch screens. The two new Color imageCLASS units also feature a number of other upgrades, including user tracking and access, and the flagship unit prints at up to 36 ppm, the fastest among the imageCLASS family to date.
For its part, OKI Data Americas has added a slew of new A4 black-and-white printers and MFPs – three printers and three MFPs. All feature upgraded memory capacity – 3 GB – for faster handling of print jobs. We’ve seen plenty of printers and MFPs get bogged down when printing complex print jobs, so this should come in handy. While most printers can maintain their manufacturer’s rated print speed when printing simple documents – such as a double-spaced page of black text – it’s a different story when it comes to printing a complex document with graphics, complicated page layout, etc. Other business-class features include a 7″ color touch screen, Secure Print, 50-sheet RADF, color scan (including scan to network and to email with LDAP support), and WiFi wireless connectivity for the flagship MB562w. All six new units also qualify for OKI’s COREFIDO 5-year warranty for the LED print head.
Since we receive invitations to sell third-party ink and toner cartridges on our Web site from South East Asia companies on a near-daily basis, we’re not surprised that Epson is going after companies that it claims have infringed on its ink-cartridge patents.
Print is dead? Not for companies such as Canon, which is expanding its toner-cartridge manufacturing facility in Newport News, Virginia. Canon will invest some $100 million in order to ramp-up production at the toner cartridge plant.
