HP Partners with Deloitte to Bring 3D Printing to $12 Trillion Global Manufacturing Market

HP Inc. and Deloitte today announced a new partnership focused on accelerating the $12 trillion global-manufacturing industry’s conversion to additive manufacturing and digital technology with HP 3D printing systems and solutions, focusing on implementing HP’s 3D-printing solutions in large-scale manufacturing environments.

In a press conference, HP and Deloitte executives discussed the new partnership. HP positions the Digital Supply phase (digital production products, including additive manufacturing and 3D printing) as the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” that follows the first Power Generation phage (steam engines and hydraulic power); Industrialization phase (electricity and assembly lines); and third Electronic Automation phase(computers and Internet connectivity).

With additive manufacturing and 3D printing, advantages include fewer design constraints with rapid prototyping, enabling manufacturers to build products in a faster, more flexible, digital manner.

HP sees 3D printing as now becoming a viable alternative to traditional manufacturing methods. In the past, HP says, 3D printing has been focused on rapid prototyping, one-off deployment of 3D printers, with limited scale and impact of 3D printing. Tommorow, however, it says its 3D-printing solutions will be used for actual production, and envisions a network of 3D printers across the enterprise, with new product-supply chains and business models. Ultimately, the benefits will include:

  • Flexibility in manufacturing.
  • Dramatic reduction in inventory and complexity.
  • Increased personalization of products.
  • Faster time to market.

The partnership will combine HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printers and HP’s 3D-printing solutions and tools, as well as its 3D-printing partner network, with Deloitte’s global client reach and manufacturing relationships, digital-operations experience, and supply-chain expertise for enterprises around the world.

The alliance, which will first be implemented in the United States, then expanded to other geographies, is part of HP and Deloitte’s partnership focused on accelerating digital transformation in enterprises.  HP states that it and Deloitte will offer solutions that combine Deloitte’s business-transformation expertise with HP’s managed print, device-as-a-service (DaaS), commercial mobility, and cyber-security offerings.

HP’s manufacturing network includes engineering, software, enterprise, and manufacturing workflow providers such as SAP, Siemens, Autodesk, and Materialise, as well as members of its open 3D-printing materials platform that includes Arkema, BASF, Evonik, Henkel, Lehman & Voss, and Sinopec Yanshan Petrochemical.

Deloitte’s Supply Chain and Manufacturing Operations practice is said to be the global leader in helping companies apply digital business strategies to manufacturing. Deloitte’s partners include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cloudera, Dassault Systèmes, Google Cloud, SAP, and Siemens. According to HP, Deloitte will play an important role in helping organizations make use of 3D-printing in their supply-chain networks.

HP Inc. President and CEO Dion Weisler commented:  “The Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us. No sector of the global economy is undergoing more radical transformation than the U.S. $12 trillion manufacturing market. Companies investing in digital reinvention are poised to outpace their peers. Building on our disruptive 3D-printing technology, together with Deloitte we are focused on helping customers transform and win in this new era.”

HP’s current roster of 3D-printing clients includes BMW Group, Jabil, Johnson & Johnson, Nike, and others, as well as 3D-printing manufacturing service bureaus located in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Deloitte Global CEO Punit Renjen commented: “The digitalization of global manufacturing operations and practices will impact companies and consumers around the world, and 3D printing will play an important role in fundamentally changing manufacturing as we know it. This alliance comprises two exceptional brands and brings together HP’s leading 3D-printing platform with Deloitte’s digital manufacturing experience and global client reach.”

“3D printing empowers design freedom and product personalization while delivering a digital thread to transform supply chains and open the door for distributed manufacturing,” commented John Dulchinos, vice president of digital manufacturing at Jabil.  “As part of this powerful ecosystem, Jabil works with leaders like HP and Deloitte to help customers across different industries benefit from HP’s groundbreaking Multi Jet Fusion technology to make production-grade parts in volume and ramp additive manufacturing innovations.”

According to Tony Hemmelgarn, president and CEO of Siemens PLM Software: “This new alliance reinforces the longstanding relationships Siemens has built with HP and Deloitte, and creates greater opportunities to digitally transform the global manufacturing industry. We see enormous potential in the next generation of product design, engineering, manufacturing and business innovations that elevate the voxel control and production-ready capabilities of HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology.”

Dr. Tanja Rueckert, president of IoT  and digital-supply chain for SAP SE commented: “As a long-standing partner of both Deloitte and HP, we are pleased to see the synergy of their unique strengths combined to drive worldwide adoption of 3D printing across industries. “SAP continues to accelerate efforts to drive a global, scalable and open manufacturing business network for industrial 3D printing with SAP Distributed Manufacturing. HP’s disruptive Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology, Deloitte’s manufacturing domain expertise and SAP’s global, cloud-based manufacturing business network help to deliver the power, speed and quality of the distributed manufacturing digital transformation today.”
